Mason Hipp and James Chartrand of Freelancefolder.com have written this 200-page guide to turning freelancing from a j*o*b to a business. After devouring the E-book and implementing some of the strategies, I am no longer worried about acquiring more clients than I can handle (a happy problem I have been anticipating and dreading). I also now have a more professional but affordable means of invoicing my clients and bookkeeping. Plus, I can see clearly how I could easily exceed my target monthly income – without working seven days a week.

What’s the difference? Well, a freelancing job is when you do everything yourself. You’re essentially trading hours for dollars. You’re probably overwhelmed with everything you need to get done, are always scrambling to find new clients, and can’t take a day off.

A freelance business, on the other hand, is when you do only those things that you are great at and enjoy doing, are marketing your service pretty much automatically, and are earning passive income. That means that, yes, you’re making money even while you’re on vacation.

So what accounts for the difference? Hipp and Chartrand recommend that every freelancer should have 3 main elements in order to achieve a successful freelancing business. These elements are:

• systems, software and automation
• a freelance team
• revenue-generating assets

Systems, Software and Automation

This element includes business tools and organization aids that will increase the efficiency of any freelancer. The E-book gives tons of recommended tools, such as software, for automating your accounting, project management and contacts management. You’ll still have to do some of your own research to pick the right ones for you, but at least, you’ve got a list to work with.

The authors make a convincing argument for automating these tasks with software in order to free up the freelancer from tasks that we may not enjoy or be good at. Besides, we only have so many hours in the day in which to work.

Building a Freelance Team

This section is about outsourcing – and more. The authors also talk about cross-sourcing and partnership. Again, Hipp and Chartrand effectively make the case for creating what they call a “distributed” team. Quite simply, it’s about multiplying the amount of work that can get accomplished and therefore increasing the amount of profits you can make.

A step-by-step process is given for building up this team. You’ll get ideas of what tasks to outsource, which ones to cross-source, and which ones to find partners for. You’ll also learn about how to fire people, should the need arise.

Revenue-Generating Assets

By far my favorite part of the book, revenue-generating assets refer to products that freelancers can and should create and market in order to create passive income. For me, this is what truly sets a freelance entrepreneur apart from an “ordinary” work at home freelancer. The authors give ample examples of assets that freelancers can create, whether they be writers, designers or anything else in between.

All in all, the E-book enabled me to take a wholistic view of my freelancing business and gave practical advice for how to treat it as a business instead of a job. Now everything I do is falling into place. My blogs are not distinct from my freelance copywriting. Neither is that special report that I’ve been wanting to write. Now I have a clear blueprint with which to build and grow my freelancing business. And I no longer think, “I better not market my services too much, because I might not be able to handle it!”

Almost a year ago, I posted about experiencing information overload while trying to figure out this Internet marketing thing. Well the other day, it dawned on me that I no longer felt information overload. I no longer felt like a newbie. I can actually understand all the Internet marketing jargon. And whenever I receive an E-mail trying to sell me yet another Internet marketing product, I could easily tell if it was something worth my time, effort and money. I am now confidently deleting those E-mails rather than getting seduced by the gurus’ slick copywriting and bonuses.

I can credit my newfound confidence and focus to finding the right teachers. One of them is Amy Bass, a homeschooling Mom of 4 who recently launched a membership site to teach others how to make money from blogs. Amy blogged herself out of a $72,000 debt and is now earning $5,000 a month.

I signed up for the Niche Blogger because Amy promised to teach her system step by step through daily lessons, which you can do at your own pace. She also answers your questions via a blog — that’s something you will almost never get from any other Internet marketing expert.

Of course, the fact that Amy is a stay at home Mom like me was a big plus. It meant that she knew my constraints and challenges, that she faced them herself and could understand my limitations.

I asked around before finally joining the Niche Blogger. Internet marketing Mom Jackie Lee told me that, although she was not new at Internet marketing, she was surprised to learn some new stuff.

I found the case to be the same for me as well. The first lessons – involving signing up for hosting and registering a domain name – were too basic for me. But after that, everything was pretty much new. I like Amy’s system for promoting a blog so that it gets indexed (and ranking) by Google fast. In fact, I used this same system for a non-profit blog that I put up. The site was indexed by Google overnight and it is now number 1 for its target keywords.

Following the Niche Blogger‘s formula for marketing a blog, I have managed to slowly increase traffic to an old blog and the new one, which I developed from the beginning using Niche Blogger’s blueprint, is beginning to pick up traffic as well.

Amy is the first to say that her system takes time. It is not a get-rich-quick scheme. You will have to do a lot of work before you can earn a full-time income with this system. It involves a lot of market research and writing – so much in fact that I almost got sick of writing myself.

If you hate writing, the members share their own discoveries through the Niche Blogger forum. You will find out where to get good-enough articles written at $1.50 each. Even though I write for a living, I just might use that route for my next niche blog.

Although the lessons are written daily, you can go at your own pace. I found myself logging into the membership site whenever I had some free time, eager to see what the day’s lesson was. Sometimes, it would take me a few minutes to implement the lesson; sometimes it took days. Sometimes, the rest of my life took over and I wouldn’t be able to log in for days on end. I never felt like I was being left behind or anything. And I always looked forward to what new skill or strategy was in store for me. Amy made learning Internet marketing fun

There’s a lot of good content to learn in Niche Blogger. As a regular member, you get access month to month. When you sign up for lifetime membership (I did; it was the most cost-effective option), you get access to all the content at once. And Amy continues to add content indefinitely. Right now, there are 5 months of content and I am in month 4.

Is the Niche Blogger for you? If you want to make money by running a number of websites and your Internet marketing skills are from complete beginner up to intermediate, then this is for you. Again, this is not a get-rich-quick scheme. If you’re willing to put in the time and effort, then this will work.

I don’t know about you, but I’m already having a very Merry Christmas!

It all started when Kelly McCausey, co-founder of Mom Masterminds and an amazing business woman, announced on WAHM Talk Radio and on Twitter that she is granting the wishes of work at home Moms. Not really thinking much about it, I submitted my own 3 wishes. I sent 3 whole wishes, ranging in cost from under $100 to almost $700 – something I had been wanting for months but couldn’t cough up the money for.

Well, what do you know? Kelly helped me get my $700-wish!

My most expensive wish was for Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero’s “She Factor” home study course.

Lorrie is my first copywriting teacher. I decided to try copywriting after hearing Lorrie being interviewed about her own WAHM dreams and how she got started and eventually became successful as a copywriter. Hers is the first of only two copywriting courses I’ve ever bought. And I could afford the digital-only format, which was a little over $100. I still open Lorrie’s copywriting course every time I write a sales page now and follow her template.

Since I am on Lorrie’s mailing list, I’ve been receiving her Emails about the live She Factor workshop, which was held in early November. I couldn’t attend the live workshop, but I listened to all the pre-workshop teleseminars and devoured everything I could. Just reading the sales page teaches you so much already, doesn’t it?
